This podcast in the Beyond Global News series recounts the story of Radio Rasant, a student-run radio station in Germany that existed from 2000 to mid-2019. The station started at the Urban Secondary School (Städtische Realschule Sundern) in Sundern, Germany.
Based on Reinhard Marx‘s idea (a now-retired teacher at that school), it was a way for students to document their school’s anniversary. Still, it quickly became a platform for exploring various topics, from local events to global issues, through collaboration with other schools, international networks, and organizations like UNICEF. The program was aired on local stations in Germany and worldwide via Shortwave radio.
This podcast explores the educational impact of the project, highlighting how students developed skills in journalism, communication, and broadcasting and were empowered to become active participants in their communities and the world. It also discusses the challenges of sustaining a student-led initiative and the legacy of Radio Rasant as an inspiration for future projects.
The success of Radio Rasant led to a groundbreaking collaboration with NEXUS-IBA and the Italian Radio Relay Service (IRRS), enabling them to broadcast internationally across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and even as far as Australia and the Americas. This global partnership expanded the students’ horizons, allowing them to engage with international themes, conduct multilingual interviews, and explore topics relevant to a broader audience. This opportunity greatly enhanced their educational experience, connecting them with listeners worldwide and fostering cross-cultural communication.
